So, about those foreign MAGA influencers and alt-right bot farms spanning across the world from Nigeria to Serbia, and why they are here to stay.
First of all, it’s profitable for the people who do it. Yes, plain and simple, it’s about the money. Folks running them, most likely, personally agree with such policies; those electorates are, in general, autocratic.
Secondly, people outside the Collective West know full well all about the finesse of the domestic political discourses in the US. The rest of the planet has been hyper-exposed to US media for decades and is aware of everything that goes on and has gone on over there. It’s easy for them to learn all they need to know about those in the EU, UK, Australia, whatever. It’s not like the Jewish Space Lasers, and covfefe are news to us.
Since the political tribes in the States have come down to idiotic Querfront culture wars between MAGA and the DSA factions of the political duopoly over there, and their supporters wage them in online space with no will to stop it, a prime market is ripe for the picking. There’s nothing illegal about such accounts. Yes, really. So it’s not like local authorities or some social ostracism will force them to stop profiting from what they consider dumb Americans and the lot. Don’t think that it’s just MAGA bots out there – they got the opposite camp covered, as well.
Last of all, don’t think for a second that someone like Elon Musk made an oopsie and now he’s caught with his pants down – this was calculated. He is a weirdo drug addict, but this was probably another one of his trolling stunts, like the Sieg heiling thing – it’s supposed to elicit pearl clutching. This won’t hurt his standing or wealth, not one bit.
On the other hand, there is an entire industry of anti-Trump outrage articles that contains a lot of niches, like the (well-deserved) ire aimed at the techbros or Israel, for example, and the legitimate media also engages in inflammatory behaviour, just like the troll accounts. But it doesn’t produce much positive social and political change. Just because someone is opposed to MAGA or the European alt-right doesn’t mean they’re not idiots on fool’s errands; they’re most likely journalists who also gotta hit KPIs, so why write about something serious when they can write something fashionable and safe?
So what can you do, as individuals? You could support moderate voices and policies in the developing countries. Most likely, you won’t – you expect the rest of us, here in developing nations and the Global South, to deal with our far-right and far-left loons on our own, and still complain how they profit from your polarization in the Collective West countries.
On a government level, just arm Ukraine. Russia and its allies came there to die – grant them their wish. Yes, Beijing and Moscow are where most of these tentacles originate, but a lot still has to do with the local political climates of every specific country.
