Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the EU must “consider all options, including a suspension of Schengen cooperation,” to prevent a repeat of Europe’s 2015 migration crisis. Denmark has joined France, Finland, and Sweden in supporting Italy’s initiative to exclude Spain from the Schengen Area after one of the largest migration crises in Europe since 2015. Interior Minister of Finland Mari Rantanen said countries that fail to protect the EU’s external border “cannot be members of Schengen.”
But the fact is that Ceuta, the Spanish exclave in Northern Africa now besieged by a flow of migrants, does not fully participate in Schengen free movement, meaning strict identity checks are legally required for anyone leaving the enclave for mainland Spain.
▪️ Checks on people leaving Ceuta remain in place as if it were an external Schengen border.
▪️ Leaving for peninsular Spain by ferry or flight requires mandatory identity verification.
▪️ Spain cannot simply be expelled from Schengen. However, other Schengen countries can reintroduce border controls with Spain if they believe it is failing to protect the EU’s external border.
But please do note how a bunch of mindless politicians are jumping to the notion of a physically impossible migrant invasion.
On the other hand, Morocco appears to be deliberately transporting thousands of migrants toward the Spanish border, with even the traffic police steering the migrants.
According to Spanish authorities, between 2,000 and 3,000 migrants crossed or attempted to cross into Ceuta in just a few hours. Hundreds entered by swimming around the Tarajal breakwater, using inflatable inner tubes and other flotation devices, while others reportedly forced their way through sections of the border.
The scale of the crossings overwhelmed the Guardia Civil, prompting the regional government of Ceuta to request immediate military assistance from Madrid. In response, the Spanish government activated emergency measures.
The Interior Ministry announced the deployment of Army units to reinforce the Guardia Civil, together with additional police officers, military divers, and a naval vessel to help secure the coastline and restore control over the border.
The European Union has expressed its willingness to assist Spain, including through Frontex, as Madrid works to regain control of the situation.
Russia has jumped at the opportunity to use this as a propaganda tool. Andrii Sybiha, the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, wrote on X that “We have detected an intensive Russian propaganda campaign across Europe using pictures from Ceuta to sow destabilization. There have been more than 1,500 publications on outlets identified by analysts as a pro-Russian network, led by Pravda and RT. Pravda Spanish has posted almost 300 of them. Every language edition of RT has pushed more than 25 news items on the issue. For years, Moscow has used migration and other sensitive topics to stoke fear and destabilize European countries. This is not about the situation itself, but about the way Russia tries to exploit any topic that can benefit its agenda. The only way to protect the public from this interference is to cut it off. All Russian propaganda resources should be completely banned in every European country that takes its national security seriously.“
People of Ceuta must be dying to leave Spanish sovereignty and “re-join” such a wonderful society as Morocco – here’s a member of the Moroccan security forces throwing rocks at one of the Moroccans who participated in the human wave hybrid attack on the Spanish exclave:
New York Times confirmed that it was an organized influx, “We’ve now spoken to several Moroccans who say they were encouraged to cross into Ceuta by the Moroccan authorities. Youssef Alaoui, 26, said that as his group approached the border on Thursday, Moroccan police officers pointed them in the right direction. “They just kept saying, ‘Go that way, go that way,” Mr. Alaoui said. He ultimately swam across the maritime border, he said, encountering several dead bodies in the water. Mohammed Ahmidho, 37, said he had heard about the influx to Spain yesterday on social media, and that as he neared the border, Moroccan police officers “said, ‘Come to Spain.'” We met Mr. Ahmidho as he was returning back across the border to Morocco. There wasn’t anything to eat or drink, or any place to sleep, he said, so he was going home.“
Further proof was provided by the participants themselves, some of whom are Instagram influencers in Morocco.

Online Spanish far-right claims that the mass hybrid attack by able-bodied “migrants” that went straight back after the Moroccan government ordered them was coordinated by five Facebook groups. One of them, discovered on the 27th by Ceuta TV, was called “Hraga España”. This group had 20,000 members.
Tankies, however, have an original take on this – Russian propaganda is amplifying it because the Kremlin cares about human rights. That’s a new one. Did Lukashenko’s government care about human rights when they orchestrated the Belarus–EU border crisis in 2021?
Ukrainian government has a point – Russia and its supporters worldwide are exploiting this for all it is worth.
