In a Bloomberg interview, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that the next US president needs to forge a truce in Ukraine, which would be in the “very best interest of the West.”
Remember Slobodan Milosevic, former Serbian and Yugoslav president, who died in an ICTY cell while standing trial for war crimes committed during the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s? As a member of the far-right Serbian Radical Party, Vucic was the Serbian Minister of Information from 1998 until 2000.

These two gentlemen are Aleksandar Pavić and Branimir Nestorović, the latter being a famous COVID-denialist and a quack, who also happen to be Serbian opposition parliament members, praising Trump’s 2024 victory during a YouTube podcast.
The citizens of Serbia share their sentiments. Europe Elects aggregated research showed that 67 percent of Serbian citizens would vote for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential elections, the second-highest percentage after Russia (78%).
Serbia is a minor BRICS tentacle in all but name, and the majority of its population has a love for all things authoritarian, especially the Russian establishment. Most people here see Russian imperialism as a pushback against US-led Western dominance and blame foreign and domestic conspiracies as the reason for the Serbian military defeats during the Yugoslav wars. The local revanchists here believe that Serbia needs powerful protectors, like Russia and China, to reclaim lost territories, starting with Kosovo.
Anyone with a heartbeat keeping an eye on the US presidential elections knows about Trump’s position that he will end the war in Ukraine, “in 24 hours”.
The Kremlin and its international cheerleaders don’t see states as sovereign actors with their own agency. Everyone has to have an overlord, just like the USSR held sway over the Warsaw Pact countries, or the Third Reich that controlled most of the Axis nations like puppets. Therefore, it is their belief that the US somehow orders Ukraine and the rest of its circle of allies and partners around.
Being hopelessly stuck in front of a few Ukrainian towns and getting increasingly droned as time goes by, the Invincible Russian Bear now needs help from North Korea and a miracle, so they can get a respite from all the trashing they’re getting from an impoverished East European nation armed with Soviet junk and obsolete Western equipment. All the while claiming that they are doing the collective West a favor, in line with their fantasy of how Russia is actually fighting NATO.
Knowing what vindictive narcissist dilettantes with a bunch of criminal cases against them can do to a country, like Milosevic (with Mr. Vucic serving in one of his governments) did to Serbia and its neighbors, Serbian citizens hoped that Trump would win. Again. With a weakened America, we hope that our “brothers and allies” in China and Russia will rise as new hegemonic powers.
Did Serbia, in particular, have any use from Trump during his first presidency? Back in 2020, The Donald summoned the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo to the principal’s office to sign a “historic” deal under the guise of the US president, which amounted to pretty much nothing other than a photo op. Oh, it also provided a wonderful opportunity for Carl Bildt to mock Vučić on Twitter:
People signing deals with The Artist of the Deal might wanna read the fine print.
Yup, Trump truly is a boon to Serbian political discourse – he and MAGA provide constant entertainment.
