Events in destitute, failed states, like Serbia, are nothing out of the ordinary if those countries happen to be well, destitute, failed states. But sometimes people want an explanation, why, how, as if a root cause will point to a solution, and then All With Be Right In The World. People who dabble in such matters, because it is their profession, and they are very good at their jobs, are way ahead of you.
The Belgrade Centre for Security Policy published an analysis, Through the Eyes of a Serb: Public Opinion in a Time of Global Upheaval, and its two key insights, in my opinion, are:
- Only 36% of Serbs express optimism about their country’s future, and even that cautious hope does not extend to their views on the broader European or global landscape.
- The Serbian public is marked by a deep sense of disillusionment with the present international standing, with 76% of Serbs who believe their country lacks the international status it deserves. The persistent sense of derrecognition is clear in public opinion surveys.
So, in the minds of the Serbian populace, life sucks and then you die, all because no one recognized how truly and obviously Magnificent and Grand we are. Oy vey. Perfect breeding ground for end times fascism.
Instead of “OK, we have issues, let’s keep cool and work on fixing our problems with rational solutions,” we jumped into full-on “Let’s smash and rob the place blind, so we can drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die“.
It’s not even a problem unique to underdeveloped countries. The Dark MAGA nonsense in the US, for example, where the shyster felon, together with a drug addict billionaire, is genuinely liked by a large part of the population and is given a mandate to create a scifi dystopia.
Or the recent rise of, say, populism in the Czech Republic. ANO is leading in the polls by 10%, and its leader, Andrej Babiš, has indicated he would suspend military aid to Ukraine and push for ‘peace’ talks.
One Czech LinkedIn user ponders this by saying, “Basically, however, it can be said that a large part of the Czech population is angry without any real reason for it. The economy is growing, wages are rising, and everything is working. But people are still mad, they don’t even know why.”
Well, they are mad because a good portion of the population are frustrated loons, that angry over everything and anything. They don’t have any rational or morally justifiable reason for it. Their reasons for frustration are either silly, yet dangerous, grievance politics, or personal idiocies of not being liked by mom and dad, or that they can’t beat their (underage) wife and kids anymore. Or their neighbour looked funny at them that one time and was rude, and it’s an unforgivable offense; therefore, the world must burn for it. Destructive politics put into action by obviously crooked officials will NOT be rejected by The Void That Is The People on moral grounds. Trump, Babiš, Vučić, Putin, and Xi, and all others, are actually liked or envied by large groups of the populace because of their manners and actions, not shunned or rejected for the sake of virtue.
