The futility of the anti-Western sentiment of Serbian protests

The Serbian ship of lunatics is the pride and joy of the Russian Navy – unattributed aphorism

The Serbian student protesters of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade have released a statement on their social media:

“Israeli forces have just taken control of the ship Adara, one of the vessels in the Sumud Flotilla that was carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Our colleague Ognjen Marković was also on this ship.

We demand an immediate reaction from our competent authorities, as well as from Miroljub Petrović, the Serbian ambassador to Israel, to release information about Ognjen and all the volunteers who were arrested in this illegal interception of this ship.

Horrified, but not surprised by the actions of the Israeli armed forces, we strongly condemn the interception of the Sumud Flotilla, which is contrary to the Convention on Human Rights, and we call on all faculties and all citizens to closely monitor the development of events in the coming days.

One world, one fight”

Here’s Mr. Marković. Feast your ears on the Borat-esque English.

Stunts such as these perfectly encapsulate one of the reasons for the failure of Serbian student protests. Their outspoken affection for anything and everything authoritarian, whether it’s the Russian revamped imperialism or the hyper-violence of Palestinian terror groups, as long as it can be framed as a resistance to what they perceive as Western hegemony, is an attitude prevalent in the political discourse of the Global South, and Israel’s very existence is considered a part of US imperialist machinations.

But this didn’t endear them to the parochial, anti-EU supporters of the ruling conservatives, whose anti-Western appetites are already sated, and it chased away the more liberal parts of the Serbian population.
