Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic confirmed that early parliamentary elections will be held on October 25.
The ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) senior members decided that Vucic will head the United Serbia election ticket and nominated him for prime minister.
Hopefully, no need to explain in detail what the ruling authoritarian, kakistocratic Progressives stand for and what they are.
Apart from them, the Student ticket, now completely devoid of anyone remotely moderate and filled to the brim with right-wing freakazoids will also run. The kicked off the campaign with displaying fireworks next to giant cross on the Danube riverbank, because nothing says “reforms” like LARP-ing the KKK.
At least three more opposition alt-right tickets will be on the ballot: the New DSS (we still haven’t recovered from the Old DSS), People’s Serbia (just…don’t), and the sovereigntist coalition, AKA anti-vaxxers, flat-earther lunatics combined with a party of psycho lawyers.
The Socialist Party of Serbia (Slobodan Miloševič’s party, remember, the war criminal) will also participate on their own with traditional coalition partners who run a local fiefdom in Jagodina and throw underage prostitute sex parties.
Serbian Radical Party, the organization led by Vojislav Šešelj, who was also convicted before the ICTY, and the predecessor of the ruling SNS, will be on the ballot, with slim chances of crossing the electoral threshold.
Last but not least, what is left of the centrists forming the Platform for European Serbia, the only pro-EU coalition. Some of the people on their list might wanna do us all a big favor and take the back seat and keep their mouths shut (yes, I’m looking at you, SRCE). The Free Citizen Movement and the pro-Palestinian Green-Left Front won’t be in it, and they WON’T be missed.
The electoral threshold is three percent of votes.
The ruling Progressives, being a representation of the narcissistic yet transactional Serbian nationalism, went in gunz blazin’ with helicopter money for retired people and a massive blitz election ticket support signature campaign. The long rows at the notary publics’ offices indeed did serve the purpose of showing the massive support that the ruling national-populist people’s front still enjoys. See, our elective autocracy isn’t exactly forcing anyone to partake in this nonsense – in fact, it is mostly made possible by the fact that our crap society relishes it.
Copying their Progressive role models, the student ticket, now devoid of the support from a majority of opposition heavy-hitters, which means they can’t rely on the party infrastructure of their now arch-nemeses from the pro-EU coalition, went into a very public signature collection campaign of their own, while still impotently “appealing” to pro-EU opposition parties to abstain and lend their support to the student nationalists, while their “student witness” honor brigade continues slinging mud on perceived “Vučić collaborators”, “people who sold out Kosovo”, and “euro-slime”.
The minor political actors continue bending the knee to either the SNS or the students. The Serbian Radical Party, headed by Vojislav Šešelj, Vučić’s former party boss who was convicted before the ICTY, joined the Progressive list, while the Communist Party and the former members of the Radicals, like Nemanja Šarović, threw their support behind students.
Politically motivated violence is nothing new in Serbia, the recent attack on the Dean of the Belgrade Philosophy Faculty, Danijel Sinani, follows a recent string of physical attacks on public figures such as Vladimir Arsenijević and Stevan Filipović.
Mladić’s half-hearted funeral did not turn out to be the boon for the nationalists they imagined it would be: a massive outpouring of grief for the “poor, courageous general” and the solidification of the far-right as the only socially acceptable political option.
The same goes for the recent conviction of Hashim Thaci – Vučić managed to come out with yet another wrong prediction that Thaci’s verdict will be lenient, when in fact he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. You see, the Serbian right-wing claims that the Hague Tribunal “only prosecutes Serbs, but that they let war criminals of other ethnicities off the hook”.
What it did manage to “achieve” is shooting itself in the foot by drawing criticism from the EU and neighboring countries, increased scrutiny by the EC and the EU parliament, and an unintended consequence of the pro-EU centrists vocally distancing themselves from the pro-Mladić narrative, driving an even further wedge between them and student radicals, who keep engaging in ludicrous public displays of nationalist signaling, still seeking the support of pro-government voters who will join “our” side any day now. Just keep yodeling “Oj Kosovo, Kosovo”, and it’s a slam-dunk.
Last but not least, the dead horse of the March 15th 2025 alleged sonic cannon use is still being beaten by both sides. If they had any brains, they would just consign it to oblivion and never speak of it again, but it serves as a victimhood narrative for both sides.
