Devil summoning of the Serbian electorate and its consequences

“I would vote for the devil himself, just to see him gone!” is a common cry among the Serbian populace. Our language doesn’t have a comparable idiom to the English language expression “Be careful what you wish for, it might come true”, because the Serbian narcissist mentality doesn’t allow for adults to take responsibility for their actions.

The theory and practice of fighting fire with fire by using alt-right kakistocratic ideology to fight the alt-right kakistocracy of Aleksandar Vučić is now coming back to bite the vindictive and shortsighted Heavenly People.

The European Commission published a new special Eurobarometer survey with perception surveys in candidate countries and potential candidates.

“In general, the surveys reveal overall support for EU accession in the Western Balkans, with the exception of Serbia. Support for EU accession is notably high in Albania (91%) and North Macedonia (69%), with citizens anticipating benefits such as improved quality of life and open borders. In contrast, Serbia displays the lowest support for EU accession in the region at 33%. In the Eastern Neighbourhood, candidate countries Georgia and Ukraine lead with respectively 74% and 68% support for EU membership. Overall, the enthusiasm for EU accession is robust, whilst at the same time influenced by each country’s specific economic and geopolitical concerns.

In the Western Balkans, a positive image of the EU is highest in Albania (82%), where citizens value EU support for economic development and anti-corruption efforts. Meanwhile, the EU’s image in Serbia (38%) is affected by low levels of trust. In the Eastern Neighbourhood candidate countries, the image of the EU is also challenged: Moldova (55%), Ukraine (49%), and Georgia (43%). Overall, the image of the EU tends to be more positive in the Western Balkans than in the Eastern Neighbourhood, with the exception of Serbia

Low levels of awareness about the European Union and enlargement policy is a common challenge in all candidate countries and potential candidates, with a significant share of citizens feeling not well informed. Only 48% in Moldova and 39% in Montenegro feel well or very well informed, while figures drop to 23% in Ukraine and 20% in Serbia.”

Trust towards the EU, countries, and international institutions

  • Russian Federation 59%
  • China 57%
  • European Union 38%

Perception of support from international donors

  • China 39%
  • Russian Federation 30%
  • European Union 29%

These results do not deviate in any way from the previous poll done by different organizations unaffiliated with the EU. Serbian people do not want to join the EU, distrust the EU, know nothing of the EU, prefer Russia and China, and live in a delulu land where China and Russia keep giving us imaginary aid.

But the relentless gaslighting efforts from the supposedly pro-democracy, anti-Vučić camp about how the EU works against the best interests of Serbia and that we should ignore the illiberal nature of the protests still persist.

I just wonder how long the EU and its leaders will continue to – openly or not – support the kleptocratic regime in Serbia, which is the key source of anti-Western sentiment in this country.

Meanwhile, in reality, the only people who voiced their support for Vučić are the Russian government and the Russian ambassador in Serbia, Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko.

The Big Brilliant Plan to oust Vučić by voting for the devil himself, Serbian nationalism. It was supposed to be easy, right? Just chant how the wonderful youngsters won’t give up on Kosovo, walk around with a bunch of giant pro-democracy crosses in the middle of the night, bring Wanger PMC on bicycles to Strasbourg, and presto! Vučić’s supporters will simply jump ship and bring about the whole non-revolution of keeping everything the same, but with fewer canopies crashing on people’s heads.

Student and civic protest Serbia

When people, sincerely opposed to Vučić but of a liberal, pro-EU persuasion, started complaining about the flaming right-wing character of the anti-government protests that started last year, we were often told to “let the kids finish the job”.

It bombed, big time.

If the student protesters were powerful and courageous, like they and their older confederates keep bragging all the time, Vučić would be out on March 15th (remember, the LRAD thing).

If the student protesters were popular among the authoritarian part of the electorate, Vučić would be out on June 28th, after the vile Vidovdan rally.

But the crowd hovering around the student movement, many of them moderate, centrist veterans of Serbian politics, culture, and media, and genuinely decent people, keep doubling down on its bad bet and keep moving the Overton window further and further into the authoritarian, paranoid Twilight Zone.

They didn’t take heed of the warning by the late Ivan Stambolić, kidnapped and assassinated in 2000 on the orders of Slobodan Milošević, his former protégé and Mirjana Marković.

He warned in one of his last interviews that you cannot rent out the banshee, summon the devil itself of nationalism, to do your dirty work, and then expect it to return to the bottle after you are done with it.
